Round 5 Rogers Match Report - Claremont Tigers vs Swan Districts

Claremont remain unbeaten in the 2023 Rogers season, as the Tigers manage to grind out a win on their home deck, against tough competitors in Swan Districts.

Claremont opened the proceedings for the Rogers Cup super-round on Good Friday, where all teams competing in Round 5 played after each other at Revo Fitness Stadium. The Tigers embraced this pressure, as the other teams in the competition watched on eagerly. Claremont for the first time this season displayed that they are able to endure scoreboard pressure and came from behind at half time to win this match by a solitary point.

Even though Swan Districts had a chance to win the game with a fairy-tale goal after the siren, it wasn’t to be, and Claremont held on in a nail biter. Whilst both teams were fairly inaccurate on the day it was Claremont that took home the win with ultimately more scoring shots. Claremont started of the super round defeating Swan Districts 5.9 (39) to 5.8 (38)

The game started off with a shootout as Swan Districts and Claremont traded goal for goal with Charlotte Tompkin and Bec Anderson getting the first two goals for the Tigers. Swan Districts outplayed Claremont for much of the second and third quarter, successfully converting what clean opportunities they had created. However, the opposition failed to put their foot on the accelerator as they struggled to convert most of their inside-50 entries. This left an opportunity for Claremont to swing the tide of momentum to come home strong in the final term.

Phoebe Browne and Jessie McCarthy were the standouts in what is now a strong Claremont identity of an impenetrable defensive unit. These two displayed impeccable chemistry as both Browne and McCarthy shone when it came to intercept marking and goalkeeper-like pressure. It was both of their efforts that helped quell the attacking pressure of Swan Districts and ultimately lead to the ball rebounding into the Tigers forward 50.

Bec Anderson also had a notable game, seemingly dominating the ruck taps whilst also finding a lot of the ball around the ground. Anderson on several occasions was able create her own clearances due to her superiority in the ruck matchup. Anderson is starting to prove a headache for the opposition each week as she looks dangerous in the ruck as well as when she rests forward. Anderson providing another tall option in the forward line combined with her aerial ability also allowed her to contribute on the scoreboard.

Savannah Muir scored a crucial goal late in the third quarter to ease the scoreboard pressure heading into the final term, where Swan districts led by 13 points. It was this late momentum that carried on into the last quarter where Claremont ended up outscoring Swan Districts 15 – 1.

Jessica Rava and Georgia Webb scored the last two goals for the Tigers and the game. These crucial conversions combined with a few minor scores put Claremont in front with two minutes left to go in the game.

The final seconds of the game saw Swan Districts rewarded a free kick for a successful holding of the ball. The siren sounded promptly meaning that it would take a kick after the siren to seal the game and end Claremont’s 2023 winning streak. Whether it was wind, nerves or Claremont’s cartwheel mind games, the kick was unsuccessful and saw the Tigers prevail in what was tough matchup and a good competitive game.

Claremont will host their next game against South Fremantle at Revo Fitness Stadium on Sunday April 16^th at 12:00pm.
