Round 6 Rogers Match Report – Claremont Tigers vs South Fremantle

Match Day Reporter

Claremont were challenged on Sunday afternoon as they conceded their first defeat at the hands of a hungry South Fremantle outfit.

South Fremantle were able to exploit the Tigers defensive structure as they played fast frenetic footy with an immense focus on running and carrying the football. This led to the Tigers being caught out a few times defensively as South Fremantle players were able to outnumber the Claremont defenders when going forward. Claremont however were able to stay with the Bulldogs for most of the match, it was the last quarter where the Tigers struggled to endure the frantic ball movement that South Fremantle pride themselves on.

Claremont players still shined in this outing, but it was the overall speed and manic intensity of the game that was too tough to endure for four quarters and saw Claremont handed their first loss for the 2023 season. Claremont went down to South Fremantle 6.1 (37) to 7.8 (50).

Jayde Musika was able to inject some much-needed energy across half forward as her spark and presence was felt throughout the match. As she squared off against her former teammates, Musika set the tone early and was able to locate the ball frequently, where she contributed to several of the early score involvements. Musika snagged two handy goals, with her best of the day kicked as a perfect drop punt as she streamed off the far wing inside 50 to convert a classy goal.

Charlotte Tompkin has had a blistering start the 2023 Rogers season and this game was no exception. Whilst Tompkin wasn’t able to make her away onto the scoreboard, like Musika she was a vital spark in the engine room and was able to cleanly dispose of the ball when caught up in the contest.

The three main focal parts of Claremont’s forward line in this match where Bec Anderson, Georgia Webb and Amelie Moe. All three of these tall forwards were able to provide successful leads as they created multiple opportunities to link up with their attacking midfielders. Each of them scored a goal apiece in what was an overall very accurate day in front of goals for Claremont. Anderson, Webb and Moe looked dangerous when Claremont did manage to make it forward and showed that they have plenty key targets when heading inside 50.

Whilst Claremont were never out of touch with a late comeback it was still South Fremantle that were able to consistently find ways forward with their immense pressure and overall endurance. This loss comes just before the Tigers take on the top of the table in West Perth, who remain undefeated until this point in the season. This defeat can help generate some key learning points for the Tigers, as they look forward to hopefully knocking off a strong West Perth squad.

Tigers will look to respond in this Round 7 game which will take place this Sunday at Pentanet Stadium in Joondalup at a starting time of 11am.
